{"id":21,"date":"2008-11-28T00:12:41","date_gmt":"2008-11-28T04:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adamrosenfield.com\/blog\/?p=21"},"modified":"2013-02-24T10:38:31","modified_gmt":"2013-02-24T14:38:31","slug":"the-infamous-red-ring-of-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/adamrosenfield.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/28\/the-infamous-red-ring-of-death\/","title":{"rendered":"The Infamous Red Ring of Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About two and half weeks ago, my Xbox 360 gave me a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xbox_360_technical_problems\">Red Ring of Death<\/a>, indicative of a general hardware failure.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/media.ebaumsworld.com\/picture\/GuyzieMan\/RedRingOfDeath.png\" alt=\"Red Ring of Death\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about two years old now, and there weren&#8217;t really any warning signs.\u00a0 I went to turn it on, and&#8230;.it didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Most RRoDs are caused by overheating; I generally keep my 360 well-ventilated, and I definitely don&#8217;t leave it running for long periods of time when I&#8217;m not playing it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to chalk this one up to poor hardware design and workmanship.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately called 1-800-4MYXBOX.\u00a0 Boy were they unhelpful.\u00a0 The automated voice-activated menus were a pain to work through, and I had to repeat myself several times to get what I wanted.\u00a0 Why can&#8217;t we just have a plain old &#8220;Press 1&#8221; instead of say &#8220;Three flashing red lights&#8221;?\u00a0 It&#8217;s easier for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>After wasting my time with that, I instead went to <a href=\"http:\/\/xbox.com\/support\">xbox.com\/support<\/a> and had a much easier time.\u00a0 It took me less than five minutes to file a support ticket and print out a pre-paid shipping label (I also had the option of getting a box shipped to me, but that would have taken longer obviously).\u00a0 No human interaction required.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning I brought my 360 down to the UPS Store and had it shipped off to the repair center in Mesquite, Texas.\u00a0 It took about a week to get there, a couple days to get fixed, and another week to come home.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s back to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/adamrosenfield.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/23\/mega-man-9\/\">Mega Man 9<\/a><\/em>!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve completed all 12\/12 achievements (200 points) and 34\/38 challenges.\u00a0 All I have left are &#8220;Beat the game without getting hit&#8221;, &#8220;beat the game while picking up only 8 energy capsules&#8221;, &#8220;beat the game 30 times&#8221;, and &#8220;beat every boss with 1 hit point left&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Ring of Life is back, but for how long?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About two and half weeks ago, my Xbox 360 gave me a Red Ring of Death, indicative of a general hardware failure.
